 OF VIETNAMESE PEOPLE IN JAPAN

On April 23, 2021, at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan, Ambassador Vu Hong Nam and officials from the Security, Labor and Education Sections of the Vietnamese Embassy had a working session with the National Police Agency and representatives of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan on strengthening measures to prevent violations among Vietnamese citizens in Japan.

Japanese attendants included Mr. Oga Shinichi, Director of the Department for Policy on Organized Crime, the National Police Agency, Mr. Sone Kenko, Deputy Director General of South Asia Department, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Mr. Yusuke  Kawahara, Head of International Investigation, Organized Crime Policy Department, Criminal Bureau of the National Police Agency, and officers of the Criminal Department of the National Police Agency and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan.

At the meeting, the two sides exchanged views on the Vietnamese criminal situation in Japan and the measures to handle the problems. Along with the increase in the number of Vietnamese in Japan (about 500,000 people), the crime situation involving Vietnamese people in Japan is increasing in number and in nature.  In particular, types of crimes such as organized theft, illegal residence, use of fake papers, kidnapping, extortion, drugs, gambling, ... are increasingly prominent in the Vietnamese community in Japan.

In this regard, the two sides agreed to cooperate in the prevention and handling of crimes such as promoting information sharing between the Embassy of Vietnam and the National Police Agency of Japan, strengthening management of companies sending Vietnamese interns to Japan, and trade unions in Japan, coordinating with Vietnamese associations in Japan to share information and guidelines in compliance with Japanese laws, receiving information on criminals from the community, strengthening Japan's supervison against the use of fake papers, thus strictly handling criminal cases.

The two sides shared their wishes and determination to soon implement the above measures to promote a safe environment for the Vietnamese community in Japan as well as strengthen the cooperation between the two countries.
