National Assembly Chairman Nguyen Sinh Hung held talks with President of Japan's House of Councillors Yamazaki Masaaki in Hanoi on December 7, during which they agreed to enhance the two parliaments’ cooperation.

Welcoming President Yamazaki Masaaki, Chairman Nguyen Sinh Hung emphasised the significance of this visit, especially in the context that the two countries are working to intensify their strategic partnership in the fields of economics, culture, education, health, and defence security.
He asked the Japanese Upper House to continue support for the implementation of high-level economic agreements and foster the Japanese Government’s continued provision of official development assistance (ODA) at a high level for Vietnam to help it growth sustainably and fulfil the goal of becoming an industrialised country by 2020.
Vietnam wishes to further its cooperation with Japan in judiciary, education, infrastructure, human resources training, high technology, support industry and agriculture, he added.
The Vietnamese top legislator also hoped for intensified coordination between the two parliaments for peace and prosperity in Asia and for the two peoples’ aspirations and interests.
Speaking of Vietnam’s development, President Yamazaki Masaaki affirmed that he and the House of Councillors will contribute more to the strong growth of the bilateral strategic partnership.
At the talks, the two leaders also vowed to maintain visits of high-ranking legislative officials, and continue close coordination at regional and international forums and on issues of mutual concern.

The four-day visit is made at the invitation of Vietnam’s National Assembly Chairman Nguyen Sinh Hung. Vietnam and Japan established diplomatic ties in 1973. Japan is the largest official donor, the second-biggest foreign direct investor and the fourth-largest trading partner of Vietnam. The country accounted for nearly 30 percent of the 90 billion USD in total official development assistance granted to Vietnam over the past 20 years. Two-way trade exceeded 27.6 billion USD in 2014.
